One of the biggest titandioxid (TiO2) producers in the world, Kronos Inc, is about to buy rutile from a Norwegian mine that wants to dump 250 million tons of mining tailings in a national salmon fjord.  

Norway is one of two countries in the world that allows new projects where mining companies can dump mining waste in the ocean. The project in Førdefjord, west of Norway, was first rejected by the environmental authorities, but got approved after the government told the authorities to value the socio-economic effects higher than the environmental consequences. Kronos Inc is now going to buy rutile from Nordic Mining, the company behind this environment harming project.

Environmental organisations in Norway has for many years fought against the mining dumping. In 2016, Norways biggest environmental youth organisation, Natur og Ungdom (Nature and Youth) lead civil disobedience actions to stop the test drilling. They are now mobilising to new civil disobedience actions to stop the start of the constitution work, starting 21. February.  

«This mining method belongs to the past century, and we are ashamed and disappointed of the Norwegian government to allow such a harmful practice.» says Gytis Blazevicius, central board member of Natur og Ungdom. “We want to encourage the industry understands that this is not the way to go towards a sustainable society, and that it is fully possible to extract the rutile without ruining the ocean in the process. Kronos Inc should demand Nordic Mining not to use ocean dumping” he ads.

Einer der größten Titandioxid-Produzenten der Welt, Kronos International, steht kurz davor einer einer norwegischen Mine Rutil, ein Titan-Mineral, abzukaufen. Diese Mine hat vor, 250 Millionen Tonnen Bergbauabfall in einem nationalen Lachsfjord zu entsorgen. 

Norwegen ist eines von zwei Ländern auf der Welt, die Bergbauunternehmen neue Projekte erlauben, in denen der Abfall im Ozean entsorgt werden darf. Dieses Projekt im Førdefjord, im Westen Norwegens, wurde vorerst von den Umweltbehörden abgelehnt. Später jedoch hat die norwegische Regierung die Behörden angewiesen, die sozioökonomischen Effekte höher zu gewichten als die folgenden Umweltschäden. Kronos wird jetzt Nordic Mining, der Firma hinter diesem umweltschädlichen Projekt, Rutil abkaufen.

Umweltorganisationen in Norwegen haben seit vielen Jahren gegen die Ozeandeponie gekämpft. Im Jahr 2016, hat Norwegens größte Umweltjugendorganisation, Natur og Ungdom (Natur und Jugend), zu Aktionen zivilen Ungehorsams aufgerufen um Probebohrungen zu verhindern. Jetzt mobilisieren sie zu neuen Aktionen der gleichen Art um den Start der Bergbauarbeiten am 21. Februar zu stoppen. 

“Die Bergbaumethode gehört dem letzten Jahrhundert an und wir sind bestürzt und beschämt, dass die norwegische Regierung ein solch schädigendes Projekt erlaubt,” meint Gytis Blazevicius, Vorstandsmitglied in Natur og Ungdom. “Wir wollen, dass die Industrie versteht, dass dies kein Weg in Richtung nachhaltiger Gesellschaft ist und dass es möglich ist, Rutil zu gewinnen ohne währenddessen die Ozeane zu zerstören. Kronos sollte von Nordic Mining fordern, von der Ozeandeponie abzusehen,” fügt er hinzu. 

Kronos Inc, un des plus grands émetteur de dioxyde de titane (Tio2), est sur le point d’acheter du rutile provenant d’une mine Norvégienne souhaitant déverser 250 millions de tonnes de déchets miniers dans un fjord national.

La Norvège est un des deux pays qui permettent et autorisent les nouveaux projets entraînant le déversement de déchets provenant de mines dans l’océan. Le projet dans le fjord Førde, à l’ouest du pays, a dans un premier temps été refusé par les autorités environnementales mais a été approuvé à la suite d’une demande du gouvernement visant à réévaluer les facteurs socio-économique primant sur les impacts écologiques. Kronos inc est maintenant sur le point d’acheter du rutile auprès de Nordic Mining, l’entreprise portant atteinte à l’environnement.

Depuis de nombreuses années, les organisations environnementales norvégiennes se battent contre les forages miniers. En 2016, le plus grand organisme environnemental de jeunesse, Natur og Ungdom (nature et jeunesse) a mené des actions de désobéissance civile pour stopper les tests de forage. Ils mettent en place maintenant de nouvelles actions pour empêcher le début des travaux prévu pour le 21 février.

«Cette méthode de forage appartient au siècle passé, nous avons honte et sommes déçus du gouvernement Norvégien qui autorise des pratiques aussi dévastatrices.» – Gytis Blazevicius. Le membre de natur ungdom ajoute : «Nous souhaitons que cette industrie comprenne que ce n’est pas la voie vers une société responsable, et que des solutions existent pour extraire le minerai sans polluer l’océan. Kronos inc devrait demander à Nordic Mining de ne pas déverser ses déchets dans l’océan.«
